Training Run

It didn't seem like a run was going to happen this evening, certainly I hadn't planned one. The evening started with a post work drink, so two pints of lager and it was off to Southsea to watch the U21 European Cup final. England versus Germany. England beaten 4-0 in an uninspiring game. I drank another pint of lager and two Jack and Cokes. All the while this had been going on, Andy Murray had been slogging away at what would become an epic 5 set match. Made it back to see Murray lose the fourth set. The fifth set was titanic, Murray twice came back from 40-0 down, to take two games - both to break his opponent. Eventually he won through.

By this time I was feeling somewhat energised and with the inkling that the ultra-marathon man had started running one evening while steaming drunk - I though sod it, give it a go. Followed pretty much the same route as yesterday, but headed down the road toward the Hayling Island ferry and made it all the way to the pier this time and beyond. The jog took me all the way back up Waverly road back to the flat.

Training Run

Having missed the Wednesday training run due to milestone deadlines - I wanted to get at least one more run in to get the mileage up for the week. In the end it was somewhat arduous - seemed like I had a brick in my belly. Allowed plenty of time for my food to settle, but maybe not.

Followed the route of last Tuesday's late night training run - but ran all the way down to Eastney baths and then back along the sea front. Intended to go as far as the pier - but nature called and I cut back toward the flat across the Canoe Lake park.

Training Run

Today was the first of the early morning training runs. Have been wanting to get out and do some training before work, partly to stop me going to be so early. Aiding me in this Climax Great South run team member and fellow Game Designer - Shane.

Shane picked me up at 7.30am and we headed down to the seafront - yeah I know driving to the seafront - shocking, but it's Shane's way.

For this we just jogged up and down between the pier and Eastney baths - completing 1.5 laps - surprisingly this covered over 3 miles - it's deceptive how far it is along there. Now that we've set the benchmark we can measure out a straight there and back run so we don't end up doubling back on ourselves.

Gym Personal Training Session

First of my proper training session with Jess at 24/7 gym in Gunwharf Quays. Have done a couple of session previously - but as I was to find out those were just to show me a few machines. For this Jess put me through my paces with some circuits.

It proved to be one of the hardest sessions I've done and could only do one and half circuits. I made the disastrous choice of eating too light a lunch and ran of fuel for my muscles. Halfway through I was yawning uncontrollably and feeling light headed and nausious.

Each circuit consisted of

10mins exercise bike.
10 reps on the assisted chin up machine (45KG)
10 press up on the half balance ball.
10 bicep curls with bar on half balance ball.
10 squats with dumbbells.
3 laps of the floor area doing lunges with weights.
10 reps on the assisted dip machine (45KG)
10 swings of medicine ball (core strength).
10 bounces of medicine ball (core strength).

I managed to get as far as the lunges in the second circuit before my legs gave way and I got a twinge, so decided to stop. cooled down with 5 minutes on the bike and doing a series of stretches.

First week of proper training and three runs done, which I'm very pleased about - really surprised myself - especially with nearly being at the 5 mile target for end of June.

Training Run

Had my kit with me in London, so decided to do a training run on Sunday - once again as I didn't know the area around my girlfriend's home I set off with a vague idea of where I'd go to, but no set route. Decided to run up to the docks and around up to London City Airport. Finally as I was running back home - decided to extend the run a bit and ran down to the A13 before heading back home to complete the circuit.

Team Training Run

The Climax Great South Run team gathered at Gunwharf Quays for the first group training run. The intention here is to do a regular Wednesday evening run. Heading out along the sea wall up to the main pier along in Southsea. With many different abilities the plan was to set your own goals and run as far as you can.

I'd set my sights on the pier itself, while the more experienced runners were going a bit further. On the day itself the weather wasn't great, but it wasn't raining - yet.

The first half was a lot harder, I ran off too quickly with the rest of the runners and paid the price later. Had to stop to walk off a painful ankle, once we got to the pier. As I turned to go back, I bumped into the advance party coming back and tagged along with them - they'd slowed down enough by then for me to keep up and that's when the weather closed in. It was windy, in your face and raining. If anything it actually spurred me on and enjoyed the run back much more than the run out.

Afterwards our erstwhile leader treated us all to Pasta and a bottle of wine in Strada which helped the post run recovery no end.
